New favorite fantasy author

I like adventure stories, especially if they involve a little magic. My mom gave me this book by Patrick Rothfuss. This is his first book and I really enjoyed it. If you like a good fantasy story, I recommend this one.

His next book will be published in March, 2011. I can't wait.

Cup holder for Steve

My colleague Steve has become a really good friend. I wanted to make something for him using my new tools. He often serves me coffee in his office, so I made him a holder for his cups.

Do you think he will like it?

I am very excited about this!

For Christmas, Katy gave me some money and told me to buy myself some new tools. Two months later, I finally made it to the store. Check out my new vice, grinder and drill bits. I should be able to make a lot with these tools!
Our old kitchen table. My new work bench.
Drilling holes in the table.

A vice to hold wood while I cut.

We replaced the metal parts with wood, so they won't dent the wood I am cutting.
A grinder with stand.

Finally, a few big drill bits. Now, I can make big holes and dowels to fit in them.

I will be posting more as I play with these tools.

Blog summary

I am happy to see that "make" is the most common verb. What should I make next?

Timber!

My parents just arrived for a visit. We woke up this morning, looked out the window and noticed that a tree had fallen down during the snow storm.

My dad helped me get it out of the road and cut  up.

Now, we have all this wood. What should we make?

Cooking & weight training

I keep telling Kai how to make a pizza. I hope he learns soon. I would love some help when Katy is busy with other things.

Table for four

We recently ordered a new kitchen table. It arrived this weekend, in pieces. I spent an enjoyable hour and a half assembling it.

In the future, I'd like to build a huge dinning table and all the chairs from scratch. But, this will do for now in our small kitchen/dinning room.

What should we make for the first meal at our new table?

Exploring Tokyo with Kai

We had a very exciting trip to Tokyo. It was Kai's first time to take a plane, train, bus, taxi and many other 'firsts'. He did great.

Kai needed a passport, so we went to the US embassy to get one. While we were there, we took time to check out Tokyo tower and the Roppongi area. It was different than other places I've been in Japan. I almost forgot I was still in Japan. We even found an amazing bacon cheeseburger. Have you ever been to this area? What did you think?
